Hunters Glen started development 25-30 years ago, and has matured into a well kept, beautiful community. The Glen was developed in two phases, the first from the bottom to midway up Davenport mountain, and the second phase from the middle of Davenport mountain to the top. A third phase (the Cove) is about 1/2 built. Lots are sold, and about 1/2--2/3 are developed. The Cove is characterized by larger lots and custom houses, and is located at the top and east face of Davenport mountain. Most of the homes have been remodeled. Most have three bedrooms, two baths, rear decks, and developed basement areas. Many come with a view of the mountains.
The original demographic was 55-65 years old, approaching retirement, or having done so already, looking for a residence in Western North Carolina. The major draw seemed to be (and still is) the diversity of arts, entertainment, and an unusually high diversity of services given the relatively small size of our communities. (ask where's the best bagel in town, and you get 14 opinions of the best place, not "what's a bagel") Most homeowners were transplants, middle class professionals from business, gov. and education, with the northeast and mid-west most represented.
The demographics are changing gradually, as original owners mature and find maintaining a house and yard no longer to their liking. New buyers range in age from 35-55, with families and jobs, along with new retirees. Most are also transplants, from diverse locations in the US. At a recent neighborhood get together, there were lots of happy comments re: ' ......didn't realize there were so many kids in the neighborhood'.
Our neighbors tend to be active, involved in their careers, as volunteers here and the surrounding communities, or in second careers. The one scarcity seems to be a lack of worn-out rocking chairs!
With the withdrawal of the original developer and transfer of responsibility to the Homeowners Association, there came a need to re-assess the HOA's role and responsibilities. That is currently underway, and is expected to be complete in the near future. Several committees are formed, as our neighbors become active in a neighborhood watch program, rewriting and updating the covenants, developing an architectural review group to replace the developer's activity, and consolidating the social functions into one group. Another recent improvement is the development of this website.

The following was written in the early 1900's and is still true today
Hendersonville, situated on the Henderson plateau at an
altitude of 2,250 feet, has a fine all-year-round climate. The all the
year round normal mean temperature is 56 degrees, while the city has a
higher day temperature in winter than many places with the same mean
temperature. The December temperature in the shade is 67 degrees, with
66 for January and 61 for February. Of the year there are 214 sunny
days, 91 partly cloudy, with only 60 cloudy. The summer weather is that
of the mountains--invigorating and buoyant--making outdoor life
appealing.
Excellent scenic gems surround the city and among these are included
Horse Shoe (that's us!), Jump Off, Sugar Loaf, Bear Wallow, Pinnacle and Stoney
Mountains. The highway up Stoney Mountain is considered one of the best
graded roads in eastern America. Just outside the city limits is Laurel
Park, a beautiful natural playground offering varied recreation, with a
two-story casino, auditorium and bath houses (Sorry, the casino is gone, but Poplar Lodge is still there and doing quite well).
Near Hendersonville are many of Nature's wonders, such as Pisgah
National Forest, Mount Mitchell, Caesar's Head, Chimney Rock, Stoney
Mountain, Lake Kanuga, Summit Lake. These are all easily accessible
from the city. Asheville is only 20 miles north, reached over a
concrete highway. (actually, now it's I-26, about a 20 minute drive)
Hendersonville, the County Seat of Henderson County, is also the
county metropolis and financial center. Located in the very heart of
the county, Hendersonville draws her trade from all sections of
Henderson county. Henderson County is bordered on the north by Buncombe
and McDowell Counties, on the east by Rutherford and Polk Counties, on
the south by Greenville County, South Carolina, and on the west by
Transylvania County. Situated in the heart of the western North
Carolina mountains in the famous "Land of the Sky," Hendersonville
draws tourists from all parts of the South and nation.
(that's still the case--summertime, especially. They shut down downtown Hendersonville on friday evenings for all kinds of stuff. Check it out here)
